World reaction to “fake” elections in Donbass. Briefly and to the point

Ahead of the elections held on the 11th of November 2018 in so-called “Donetsk People’s Republic” and “Luhansk People’s Republic” the world community shared its position concerning the illegal vote supported by Russia. Here are the theses from official statements of different governments and international organizations which show that the civilized world will never recognize the results of such elections and the fake leaders of unacknowledged “republics”.

NATO does not recognise the reported elections held on 11 November in the self-proclaimed and unrecognised “Luhansk People’s Republic” and “Donetsk People’s Republic.” They run contrary to the letter and spirit of the Minsk Agreements and undermine efforts towards a peaceful resolution of the conflict.

European Union

The EU considers the “elections” of 11 November 2018 in the non-government controlled territories of the so-called “Luhansk People’s Republic” and “Donetsk People’s Republic” as illegaland illegitimate and will not recognise them. The EU condemns these ”elections”, as they are in breach of international law, undermine the commitments taken under the Minsk agreements and violate Ukraine’s sovereignty and law.

US Department of State

The United States joins the European Allies and partners in condemning the November 11 sham “elections” in Russia-controlled eastern Ukraine as an attempt by Moscow to institutionalize its Donbas proxies, the so-called “Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics.” These entities have no place within the Minsk agreements or within Ukraine’s constitutional government, and they should be dismantled along with the illegal armed formations.

Joint statement on the situation in Eastern Ukraine by President Emmanuel Macron and Chancellor Angela Merkel following their meeting with Ukrainian President Poroshenko in Paris

The French President and the Chancellor underlined that elections held in occupied territories of Donbass are illegal and illegitimate.

Both emphasized that local elections in the affected areas of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions should be held in accordance with the Minsk Agreements and should therefore be in accordance with OSCE and Ukrainian law standards.

Global Affairs Canada

Canada is deeply concerned about illegitimate elections planned in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions of Ukraine for November 11.

Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity must be respected. We condemn Russian actionsthat disregard international norms and further threaten lives in eastern Ukraine.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Poland

Poland strongly condemns the sham elections organized by the pro-Russian separatists in the occupied area of Donbas on the 11th of November 2018. Poland does not recognize any actions which undermine Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity in its internationally recognized borders.

We call on the European Union and other partners to respond promptly and adequately, in a show of solidarity, by strengthening the existing restrictive measures and to apply visa bansand asset freezes to persons responsible for organizing the so-called elections.

British Foreign & Commonwealth Office

The UK condemns the so-called “elections” which Russian-backed separatists held in the Donbas, Ukraine on 11 November: they are illegitimate and in violation of the Minsk Agreements. They undermine efforts to achieve peace in the region, and they are illegal under Ukrainian law.

We call on Russia to fully implement its commitments under the Minsk Agreements, to stop providing financial and military support to the separatists, and to withdraw its armed forces and military equipment from Ukrainian territory.
