Canada reiterated its support of Ukraine

Earlier this month Karina Gould, Minister of International Development of Canada made a virtual visit to Ukraine where she reiterated Canada’s broad support for Ukraine.

The official news release on the visit stated that Ms. Gould together with representatives of Ukraine’s government, Ukrainian civil society and the Ukrainian Canadian Congress discussed peace and security, governance programming, gender equality and the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The visit was focused on three problematic questions:

  • peace and security (Karina Gould virtually travelled to conflict-affected Kostyantyntynivka and assured of Canada’s support in developing joint efforts to “build inclusive peace in Ukraine”);
  • inclusive governance (adapting of Canada’s approach to strategic government planning and transparent reporting to the Ukrainian reform context was considered);
  • gender equality and empowerment of women and girls (the problem of gender equality and women’s rights in Ukraine has been discussed with the representatives of Ukrainian Women’s Fund).

A $30 million support over 5 years for inclusive governance projects in Ukraine was announced during the visit. The Minister also informed about $1.9 million in support of the socio-economic well-being of women veterans.

“As we celebrate the upcoming 30th anniversary of Ukraine’s independence, Canada remains committed to working with Ukraine toward building the inclusive and sustainable future that the people of Ukraine deserve. Through continued cooperation in the governance sector and by promoting the advancement of gender equality, Canada is helping Ukraine advance its reform agenda in a strengthened democracy”
